Every retirement decision is a tax decision.
Retirement planning at Up Capital is ongoing work. Your income plan, your portfolio and your tax planning are managed by the same team and updated together as things change. Choose a topic to see how.
Roth conversion planning
Before we recommend a Roth conversion, we have already worked out what it does to your Medicare premiums, how much of your Social Security is taxed, and which bracket you land in for the year.
Withdrawal order
When we design the order you draw from your accounts, we have already mapped it against your tax brackets for the next several years, your Social Security start date and your required withdrawals.
Adjusting as things change
When markets, tax law or your income change, we adjust your plan and your tax planning together, at the time, with the full picture in front of us.
Social Security timing is one of the decisions built into that income plan. For a closer look at how these pieces fit together, read our guides to withdrawal order and Roth conversion timing.
Five decisions that decide how long your money lasts.
Each one affects the others, and all of them affect how much you keep after taxes.
Withdrawal order and income
Which accounts do you draw from first, and when do you switch? We design a withdrawal plan across taxable, tax-deferred and Roth accounts that looks at your lifetime tax bill, several years at a time.
Social Security timing
For a married couple, the gap between the best and worst claiming choice can be six figures over a lifetime. We work through your situation, including your taxes, your other income and how long you may live, so you can make this one-time decision with confidence.
Roth conversions
There is often a window, usually in the years between retirement and required withdrawals, when converting to a Roth can lower your future tax bill. We find those windows and size the conversions to stay within the bracket you want, year by year.
Medicare and healthcare costs
If your income crosses certain thresholds, Medicare premiums go up, and the increase can add thousands a year. We plan retirement income with those thresholds in view, so a good tax move this year does not become a higher premium two years later.
Required withdrawals
Once required minimum distributions begin, they create taxable income whether you need it or not. We reduce their impact ahead of time, through Roth conversions, charitable giving and bracket management, and manage them carefully once they start.
Dollar amounts described here are hypothetical illustrations, not actual client results. Outcomes depend on your income, accounts, taxes and other circumstances.

Retirement planning questions.
Your income plan, your investment portfolio, your tax planning, Social Security timing, Medicare costs and the order you draw from your accounts, all worked out as one plan.
Taxes affect which accounts you draw from, when a Roth conversion makes sense, how much of your Social Security is taxed, whether your Medicare premiums go up, and how long your money may last. We work out those tax effects before we recommend an income plan.
The five to ten years before you retire are the most useful time. That window gives you room to adjust savings, manage tax brackets, consider Roth conversions and set up a withdrawal plan before your income changes.
Yes. We look at Social Security timing, pensions, required withdrawals, and your taxable, tax-deferred and Roth accounts together, so your withdrawals fit your overall income and tax picture.
